Doctoral studies admission procedure - academic year 2012/2013 (opens in autumn semester 2012)

  • The Faculty of Social Studies ranks among young and dynamic faculties of Masaryk University. It offers education at all three levels according to Bologna structure: Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral. While at the postgraduate level, there are whole degree programmes open in English, Bachelor's degrees are currently offered in Czech only. Master's degrees in English are offered in the study fields of Sociology and European Politics (under Political Science programme). Other Master's are in Czech only. All doctoral study programmes are offered in English as well.

  • Further information about the faculty:

    The Faculty of Social Studies was established at Masaryk University in Brno in 1998. Until then, the social sciences had been part of the Faculty of Arts and the emergence of the independent faculty confirmed Masaryk University as an international centre of sociological, psychological and political science research. Our Department of Sociology was founded in 1921, and thus belongs to the oldest workplaces of its kind in Europe.

    The faculty focuses on both education and research in the fields of Sociology, Political Science, International Relations, European Studies, Psychology, Media Studies and Journalism, Social Policy and Social Work, and Environmental Studies, with the recent additions of Gender Studies, Social Anthropology and Strategic and Security Studies. It is fully committed to linking educational activities with its own research projects. Individual degree programmes are based on the internationally recognized credit system (ECTS) and are clearly divided into Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral levels. Degree programmes are continually being adapted to meet changes in society and its current needs.

    Our graduates find jobs in various areas, including state administration, counselling, research institutions, social work, the NGO sphere, the media and the health care system. Some devote themselves to scientific-pedagogical work at universities, others become managers or work in international organisations.

  • Doctoral study of political science is geared toward preparing highly qualified experts in the field of political science. The study is designated for graduates of Master's programmes in political science. This study is focused particularly on analysis of present political systems, comparative analysis and typologies of political parties and organised interests, research of recent developmental trends in political theory, study of political extremism and analysis of political conflicts.

  • The doctoral programme is designed for specialists, who endeavour to obtain scientific qualification in one of the following fields: General psychology, Developmental psychology or Social psychology. It is designed for students who graduated in masters study programmes of psychology, with exceptions for graduates in other similar disciplines. The study is based on individual and creative work of doctoral students who elaborate theses of their doctoral dissertations under the supervision of their teachers.
