The part of this activity is a participation at basic and applied research, which with faculty contribute to science knowledge development. In the academic year 2012/2013 faculty continues in the concept of three levels of education (Bachelors – Masters – Doctorate). Bachelors study programmes, standart 3 years long, are set to graduates. The master study programme, standart 2 years long, can study a graduate of bachelor study programme. Doctoral study programme is for graduates of masters programme graduates. The Faculty of Science at MU offers 7 quality doctoral programs in 38 accredited fields of study. Unfortunately, only a limited number of those who successfully take the entrance exam can be admitted. The doctoral studies program (DSP) is focused on scientific research and independent, creative practical or theoretical work in the area of basic and applied research and development. The main condition for acceptance is properly completed studies under the Masters’ degree programs. The standard period of studies is four years (in accordance with the Law on Institutes of Higher Education 111/1998, and the Regulations for Studies and Examinations), and may be extended to a maximum period of seven years including interruptions. Studies may be taken in presentation form or combined. Studies are pursued according to an individual study plan under the guidance of an advisor, and are completed by passing a standard examination and defence of dissertation, usually within 4 years. Programme:
Biochemistry (4-years), doctoral studies
  • The purpose of the doctoral program in Biochemistry is the preparation of scholars with the highest degree of education for creative work in all branches of biochemistry. The independent status of the Biochemistry program reflects the position of contemporary biochemistry as a separate multi-disciplinary field at the interface between chemistry, biology, and physics. The program is further broken down into two fields depending on emphasis: functional (the field of Biochemistry), and structural (the field of Biomolecular Chemistry). The reasons for this division are mainly practical, stemming from the differences in methodological approach to studying the functions and structures of living organisms at a molecular level. Because of the broadness of the concept of biochemistry, its division into fields allows for deeper specialization in preparing students for practice. Both fields offer a deepening and broadening of theoretical education, and an opportunity to acquire practical skills and experience. The personnel and technical facilities of the department allow students to gain experience in both in basic theoretical and experimental research, as well as in medical, veterinary, industrial, environmental, and other applications.

Geography (4-years), doctoral studies
  • The Ph.D. study programme Geography links up with the knowledge of students acquired in the M.Sc. programme of Geography and Cartography. It is oriented on deepening and broadening of knowledge, ability and skill in the specialised branches of geographic and cartographic research with accentuated study of causative relations and connections in a broad complex of the studied phenomena and processes. Main stress is put on the active mastering of new knowledge above all of foreign technical literature and participating in specialised lectures both at their own institute as well as at others. Students are led to using modern methods and technologies of processing and evaluation of geographical data with utilising the existing possibilities of computer data processing and methods of remote sensing. The objective is to equip them with deep theoretical knowledge and educate them as outspoken scientists who are able to further work in the spheres of theoretical as well as applied scientific research. The student is led to the ability of independent formulation of the scientific problem, obtaining relevant data, their qualitative and quantitative evaluation, the selection of the suitable methodology and evaluation of results obtained from analytical and synthetic views with respect to making up alternative scenarios of the development of geographical phenomena and processes in space and time.

Chemistry (4-years), doctoral studies
  • This doctoral study program aims at training highly skilled specialists in the below mentioned fields of study and is based on research and independent creative activity in particular fields of research or development, while the main focus remains either independent and creative experimental activity or theoretical pursuit supervised by the tutor. The study requires a thorough theoretical knowledge of chemistry. The student acquires this knowledge by completing compulsory optional courses, which are updated by the latest information in the given area, and through optional courses gaining experimental technique skills, as well as learning new methods. In addition, the programme contributes to developing the abilities of students to critically evaluate findings gained from literature and pass on these as well as their own findings to the public by means of seminars and finally by assisting during teaching students of bachelor and master programs. The purpose of this study is the facilitation of gaining significant scientific results that can be published in prestigious journals, learning to recount one's findings in English with the aim to publish them and compiling one's findings in a doctoral dissertation.
