Course objectives
The objective of the course is to introduce students to the study of basic principles of environmental protection, envrironmenal units, state environmental policy of the Czech Republic, EU and OECD. At the end of this course, students should:

- be able to address topical environmental problems and instruments removing pollution,

- know environmental units, problems with their pollution and the determinants and consequences of the public sector and private sector,

- know principles, objectives and sectoral policies of the environmental policy of the Czech Republic, EU and OECD,

- be able to apply non-market evaluation methods and use them in project management of environmental public projects,

- be able to find suitable funding for a selected environmental problem.
Syllabus
  • Tutorials focus on the following topics:
  • 1st topic: Basic information about the course and the theory of the environment, environmental pollution, environmental instruments, environmental units. Economical contexts of environmental protection, non-market valuation methods. Environmental protection funding
  • 2nd topic: Environmental policy of Czech republic and European Union. Regional aspects of Czech state environmenta policy
  • 3. topic: Economic instruments of czech state environmental policy. Instruments of implementation of environmental policy, legal Instruments, informative Instruments and voluntary Instruments
  • 4. topic: Protection of the climate system of the Earth and air pollution. Water protection and economical contexts of water protection. Sustainable use of natural resources, material flows and economic consequences of waste management.

Assessment methods
The course takes the form of lectures. The lectures (16 lessons) are divided into four parts. The main emphasis is put on self-study.

The course is concluded with an oral exam. Students are eligible to take the oral exam provided that they fulfill given conditions:

1. they hand in a seminar paper in a given extent and structure within the obligatory date,

2. they successfully pass an on-line test after every part of the course in the IS MU during an obligatory period (a test is regarded as successful if at least 60% answers are correct).
