Course objectives
This course will introduce students to the economics and econometrics of cost and efficiency analysis. The first day concentrates on cost analysis, covering economic principals, the practical purpose of the analysis and common practical issues that arise when undertaking such analysis. The second day extends the material covered in the first day to encompass allowance for, and measurement of the extent of, inefficient behaviour of firms. The regulatory context and motivation for such analysis will be explored, as well as the key economic principles underpinning the approach. Econometric techniques will be explained including the benefits and approaches to using panel data.
