Course objectives
The objective PV237 is to help students explore the unique aspects of crafting effective strategies that make organizations thrive and people emerge from the crowd. As studies in strategy and leadership require delving into the broad literature on business and cognitive sciences, the course encourages students to pursue multi-disciplinary knowledge and to utilize multiple methodologies to study how organizations change in order to develop and sustain an advantage. The course aims to attract students interested in developing expertise suited to their particular study or life interests. Particular attention is paid to prepare students for assuming leadership in businesses and public organizations, by addressing questions like “what makes people capable of joint performance?” and “how do you reap the benefits of seemingly unrelated businesses?” or “why do people find innovative ideas in unlikely places?”. Most topics are addressed by drawing on history, psychology, arts, literature, biographies of business leaders, military science – the foundation of which has traditionally been used to study strategy and leadership – and on other complementary disciplines. More in general, PV237 provides an understanding of: • The firm’s strategic mind-set and people’s strive for excellence. • The firm's ecosystem and the decision-making to sustain competitive advantage. • How innovative firms generate new thinking to break down silos in organizations, and how they create superior value for stakeholders. • How to enhance the industry attractiveness, the firm’s competitive position and its productivity by exploiting innovative ideas. Throughout the course, students learn to: • Develop a proper mind-set to master uncertainty and promote social, economic and environmental change. • Perform in-depth analysis of industries and competitors, discover fallacies in decision-making, predict competitive behavior, anticipate change, and develop sustainable advantage over time.
