Course objectives
In comparison with course VV014 this subject more heavily counts with due familiarization with relevant religious texts and their interpretation. In accord with shown interest of the participants some other themes (not specified by the lecture structure) may be introduced. Contemporary sects will not be overlooked.
Syllabus
  • On the basis of the initial lectures (but also without having passed through them) it has been intended here - partly in workshop form - to deepen the knowledge in this sphere, and that through the relevant texts.
  • The Old Testamental tradition will be illustrated by the starting chapters of the Book of Genesis and the Book of Job, Christianity will be characterized by the final chapters of Matthew and Mark, and the Letters of St. Paul (Romans, Jews).
  • The critical heritage of Hume (and Mill) and Masaryk's relation to religion (considering Čapek's "Discussions with TGM", too) will be taken into account.
  • The Orient is to be introduced by passages from the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, and we shall try to somewhat understand the unknown world of tao and zen.
  • A choice of texts (Kierkegaard, Russell, Moody etc.) is to serve as a stimulus for considerations on the impact of rationality in religion.
Literature
  • Literature is being assigned during the lectures.
Teaching methods
Successive linguistic and religious explanation of texts.
Assessment methods
2 credits after both regularly attending the classes and submitting 1 essay (assigned or accepted theme).
Further comments (probably available only v češtině)
Study Materials
The course is taught once in two years.
Teacher's information
Kurs navazuje na "Religionistiku". (Není nutné její absolvování!) - Je žádoucí, aby nás - pokud možno - nebylo víc než kolem 15 účastníků. Abychom udrželi poněkud "seminární" klima. Očekává se partnerský vztah při diskusi. Zve M. Dokulil
The course is also listed under the following terms Spring 2004, Spring 2006, Spring 2008, Spring 2010, Spring 2014.
