Course objectives
This course introduces students to the principles of natural function according to Haeckel's definition of ecology (the science of relationships between organisms and the environment, or to put it another way, the science concerned with the economy of nature). The course explains the concept of ecosystems: all the main structures and functions for its operation will be discussed. The principle of continuity of structures and processes in nature will be demonstrated, as well as the principle of dynamics of all actions occurring in nature. Human activities and their influence on the functioning of ecological systems will also be mentioned. Adaptations and ecological strategies of producers, consumers and decomposers, cycles of important elements, energy inputs and outputs on the basis of the world biomes will be demonstrated. Finally, ecological balance and its principal attributes will be discussed.
