Course objectives (in Czech)
The goal of this course is to teach students the basics of - freelancing - networking - pitching - conducting of interviews for media, podcasts and companies - solutions journalism
Learning outcomes (in Czech)
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- conduct interviews;
- create a network of contacts in journalism;
- write a compelling pitch to media;
- start a podcast;
- launch a copywriting business.

  • (1) SELF-DEVELOPMENT + NETWORKING + RESEARCH Lecture: How to present yourself, find your niche, network successfully and connect with people you admire. Homework: write your own bio (2) INTERVIEWS Lecture: How to conduct great interviews Workshop: American podcaster Reena Ninan on how to have a successful podcast Homework: Research (3) PITCHING + FREELANCING Lecture: How to write a successful pitch Workshop: A freelancer on how to launch a successful freelance business Homework: Write a pitch (4) SOLUTIONS JOURNALISM Lecture: How to write articles about solutions (not only problems) and have a positive impact on the society and the environment + check students‘ pitches Workshop: Brazilian/US professor of solutions journalism Bernardo Motta Homework: Write an interview and analyze your colleague’s interview (5) CONSULTATION Consultation of the interview
Literature
  • This course is based on practical know-how and does not require students to read primary or secondary literature.
Teaching methods (in Czech)
Lecture, discussion, classroom activities, writing an interview, analysis of other people‘s interviews.
Assessment methods (in Czech)
To successfully complete the course, students need to attend all five classes. In case a student is not able to come to the class (because of illness or family reasons), they have to email the teacher minimum two days before the class and will have to complete homework to make up for their absence. Students also need to submit the following homework: - a bio (one short paragraph, max. 6 lines) - a pitch (1 page) - an interview (written/video/audio) - 3 standard pages, headline, dek, three photos of the interviewee and one's bio under the text - analysis of someone else's interview - one question for each class with a guest speaker
