Course objectives
The course aims at familiarising students with the topics of development of mainly printed media covering the key countries in the Euro-American civilisation area (Great Britain, France, Germany, or USA) from the 16th century to the mid-20th century. The course focuses on the issues of hoarding and transmitting information and images, the process of press production, and media censorship and regulation, as well as the topics of printed press authors, their audience, and the issues of media effects and economic aspects associated with media (classifieds, advertising and distribution). The course also presents basic changes in the printed media products with the given space-time, noticing the development of their periodicity, circulation, content and form. It pays special attention to the issue of the rise of mass press in the course of the 19th century.
