Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
understand and explain basic psychological characteristics of lives of children living without their „own“ family,
to map the problems of these children in young age as well as adulthood,
to focus on the possibilities and ways of working not only with the children but also with the potential substitute family and the substitute family itself.
Understand important connections between the biological family, the child, the institutional care, the role of the state, the applicants and the substitute family.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, getting to know each other, motivation, expectations.
  • 2. Legal issues, types of adoption and foster care, institutions and their cooperation, the role of a psychologist in adoption and foster care.
  • 3. The attachment impairment, its manifestation and consequences, the needs of a child in a new relationship.
  • 4. The process of mediation adoption and foster care.
  • 5. Emotional deprivation, manifestations, psychic trauma, adaptation in the new family, problems and solutions.
  • 6. Personal experience of a family with children under adoption and foster care.
  • 7. Working with adults who grew up in institutional care.
  • 8. Identity of the fostered child, his/her origin, place in the substitute family.
  • 9.The experience of a director of a children´s home.
  • 10. Child coming into the substitute family from a different ethnic background, upbringing.
  • 11. Preparation of the family for the new member.
  • 12. Experience of a psychologist working in the area of adoption and foster care.
  • 13. Summary, conclusion, evaluation, discussion.

Teaching methods
The interactive course has a form of a seminar consisting of two parts – theoretical and practical. Invited speakers and experts as well as a substitute family from the area of interest will share their experience and knowledge with us - active student approach to discussion is required.
Assessment methods
The course will be ended by colloquium (25% classification).
