Course objectives
This course introduces many of the major schools of thought and topics of research in the field of social theory in anthropology. We take an historical view of the development of social theory from the mid of the 20th century until today. Students will learn about the many developments in social thought during this time by reading textbooks as well as primary source materials.
Syllabus
  • 1) Introduction to the course. Social theory and social anthropology. Anthropology as art and science.
  • 2) Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim (social fact), Marcel Mauss (tosocial fact), Bronislaw Malinowski, Alfred Radcliffe-Brown, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Pierre Bourdieu. Social fact, langue-parole, grammar of action, social structure and culture.
  • 3) Social structure and agency: “strategy” a “tactics” - Michel de Certau (Praxis of Everday Life), symbolization of social structure - Mary Douglas (Purity and Danger).
  • 4) Claude Lévi-Strauss x Jean Paul Sartre (La Pensée sauvage). Culture vs. structure, prescriptive and performative structure (Marshall Sahlins X Gananath Obeyseker).
  • 5) Modes of symbolic and interpretative antropology: Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner, David Schnaider, Carlo Ginsburg.
  • 6) Antropology as text critique. Michail M. Bachtin a koncept polyfonie.
  • 7) Pierre Bourdieu – George Marcus: debate
  • 8) Postructuralism: Michel Foucault. Genealogy of power/knowledge.
  • 9) Actors-network theory(ANT). Bruno Latour. Michel Callon. John Law and Annemarie Mol.
  • 10) Globalization and new localities. New geography. Akhil Gupta a James Ferguson. Cultur logic of post/colonialism, clash and co-existence of cultures. Anthropology and post/colonialism, orientalism, okcidentalism, globalization, development studies.
  • 11) Sidney Mintz and Eric Wolf. Politics of space. Ethnoscapes, diasporas, mobility, migration. Anthropology of globalization: Arjun Appadurai and transnational anthropology; Ulf Hannerz , Marc Augé and anthropology of supermodernity; Saskia Sassen and global cities. 12) Postsocialism (Katherine Verdery, Caroline Humphrey, Chris Hann).
