Course objectives

At the end of the course students ahould be able to analyze selected strategically important aspects of the ancient wars.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students should be able to: - analyze historical conflicts - identify the differences in the military of different states - describe the basic trends in ancient warfare

Syllabus

• 1. Strategy in the ancient Greece and its determinants 2. Greek-Persian wars 3. Peloponesian war as a model conflict (seminar) 4. Struggle for hegemony in Greece and rise of Macedonia 5. Expedition of Alexander (seminar) 6. Successors of Alexander 7. Strategy in the ancient Rome and its determinants 8. Second Punic war as model conflict (seminar) 9. Expansion in the Mediterranean 10. Crisis of the republic in the 1st century B.C., civic war (seminar) 11. Defence of the Empire 12. Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures and class discussions.

Assessment methods

Seminar paper (maximum 10 points), two essays (4 points each), presence on the seminar (1 point each - maximum 4 for all seminars) and active participation (3 points each - maximum 12 points for all seminars). Students need at least 18 points of maximum 30 points.
