Course objectives
The goal of the course is to introduce students into qualitative approach to psychological research. The course is focused on the thematic analysis, which is regarded as a basic approach in qualitative research. Emphasis is put on the training of practical analytical skills.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to :
- explain and apply the qualitative mode of reasoning in psychological research
- formulate a research question and develop a protocol for a semi-structured interview
- perform a basic analysis of the data
- formulate and present the resultant themes
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to quqlitative research, main approaches, thematic analysis. Formulation of a research question and its role in the research project.
  • 2. Sample recruitment and data collection/creation. Conducting a research interview. Data transcription. Informed consent.
  • 3. Methods of coding in the thematic analysis. The choice of an epistemological perspective and its consequences for the analysis.
  • 4. The development and formulation of themes, writing a research report. Working with literature in qualitative analysis. Enhancing validity through researchers' consensus and participants' feedback. Variations of the thematic analysis.

Lectures, exercises, discussions, homework assignments, feedback.
Assessment methods
Students are evaluated on the basis of a semestral paper and a written exam.
