Course objectives
At the end of the course students will be able to: understand basic approaches to understand law (or legal science) by the arts; explain approaches to law and to critically analyze legal texts and legal practice; interpret some contemporary legal movements and approaches; use information about law not from legal documents; make decisions about position of law in society.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to the course; the theoretical approach of the topics law and fine arts. (Boyd White, Law and Literature, Law as Literature,…).
  • Paraphrases of the freedom: F. M. Dostojevskij: The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment.
  • "Is there possible any justice without virtues?" – F. Dürrenmat: Der Richter und sein Henker and Der Besuch der alten Dame.
  • The Fight for law: W. Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice, R. v. Ihering: Der Kampf ums Recht.
  • The Justice as Humanity: Karel Čapek.
  • Symbolism of Justice.
  • Symbolism of Justice in architecture of court buildings.
  • The look at law in literature.
  • The problem of Truth. Sofoklés: Oidipus: Rex, Foucault.
  • Law and Music.
  • Law and estethic of digital media.
  • The Individual nad Legal System; Kafka, Camus, Sartre.
  • The end of the course; evaluation.
