Course objectives
The course provides knowledge of gerontology – science of aging and old age, poroblems of old people and life in old age, furthermore it provides knowledge of geriatrics – separate medical science associated with health and functional state of old people; and knowledge of nursing. Students will improve knowledge about specialities of the most frequent pathological conditions in old age and specifics of nursing care of geriatric patients. Furthermore students will improve knowledge about old people needs and about nursing problems in old age. The course teaches students to apply this knowledge with nursing processes, it also teaches students to apply aquired knowledge to solve particular problems of nursing care in model situations.
Course main objectives:
to understand and define essential aspects of old age, gerontology and geriatrics;
to improve knowledge about historical development of gerontology and geriatrics globally and in the Czech Republic;
to obtain historical information and knowledge about the care of old people;
to improve knowledge about the problems of aging and old age, about ensuring of health and social services and nursing care in old age;
to improve knowledge about specific diseases in old age, most frequent nursing problems and disorders and senior needs;
to improve knowledge about specific requirements of nursing care of geriatric patiens;
to learn about specialities of the most frequent pathological conditions in old age;
to be able to apply the gained knowledge to nursing processes with geriatric patients, including nursing anamnesis, nursing diagnostics, planning of nursing care, nursing intervention and provide analysis of the effect of the provided care;
to orientate oneself in nursing documentation used in geriatric treatment;
to be able to apply the gained knowledge to solving particular problems of nursing care of geriatric patients (model situations).
Syllabus
  • These subjects will be covered in lectures:
  • Introduction to gereontology and geriatrics.
  • Clarification of basic definitions – old age, gerontology, geriatrics. Structuring of old age and gerontology.
  • Historical development of gerontology and geriatrics globally and in the Czech Republic. Demography of old age in the Czech Republic.
  • History of care of old people in the world and in the Czech Republic. Biological, psychical and social aspects of aging.
  • Specifics of geriatric care.
  • Health and social services for seniors, including all aspects of various legislation.
  • Specifics of diseases in old age and seniors needs. The most frequent nursing problems and disorders in old age.
  • Nursing problems of chronic wounds in old age – problems of decubitus.
  • Nursing problems of geriatric patient with respiratory system disorders.
  • Nursing problems of geriatric patient with cardiovascular system disorders.
  • These subjects will be covered in seminars:
  • Evaluation and measuring techniques in geriatric nursing practices. Measuring areas in geriatrics, profile of particular techniques, availability of use with geriatric patients and evaluation of tests.
  • Nursing processes, plan of nursing care – repetition, sequence to knowledge from bachelor study programm.
  • Nursing processes of geriatric patients with respiratory or cardiovascular system disorders and statement of future nursing care plans.
  • Within individual students work it is necessary to study following subjects:
  • Organisations and documents dealing with problems of aging and old age globally and in the Czech Republic – individual study.
  • Nursing processes and plans of nursing care – individual study, preparation for seminar.
  • Evaluation and measuring techniques in geriatric nursing practice. Measuring areas in geriatrics, particular techniques, availability of use with geriatric patients and test evaluation – individual study, preparation for seminar.
  • Within individual students work it is necessary to fulfill the following tasks:
  • Preparation of two plans of nursing care of geriatric patient with respiratory or cardiovascular systém disorders – following set criteria.
