Course objectives
The aim of course is to provide students a detailed knowledge of microscopic structure, function and embryonic development of orofacial region.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able to 1) describe the microscopic structure of all important organs in orofacial region; 2) describe normal embryonic development and also cause and mechanism of malformations and microstructural changes of the orofacial region; and 3) apply acquired knowledge in related clinical subjects.
Syllabus
  • Histology – an introduction to the subject. Oral cavity and its content. Oral mucosa – microscopic structure, regional differences and specialty.
  • Microscopic structure of th tongue. Salivary glands of the tongue. Small and large salivary glands of the oral cavity. Saliva.
  • Tooth and dental bed. Periodontium. Parodontium. Gingiva. An overview of methods for hard tissue processing for light microscopy.
  • Tooth – microscopic structure of enamel.
  • Tooth – microscopic structure of dentin. Types of dentin. Clinical significance of dentin.
