Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
Subject is complementary to Medical chemistry lecture (BVLC011p). Students become familiar with the background and equipments of chemical laboratory. They will learn to perform simple laboratory operations. During experiments students verify some findings discussed in theoretical lessons.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to handle with basal laboratory equipment and follow proper procedures and regulations for safe handling, use, and disposal of chemicals Student will demonstrate understanding - relationship between the composition of different solutions, beverages and body fluids and their pH value
- will be able to describe the general composition and role of the buffers, explain their function and apply this knowledge in explaining the role of buffering systems in the organism
- to describe the essence of the formation of insoluble and poorly soluble compounds, to identify factors that can influence the insolubility of compounds
- will be oriented in relations bettween a structure od bioorganic molecules and their reactivity
Syllabus
  • Handling chemical substances.
  • Preparation of solutions.
  • Measurement of pH. Titration curves.
  • Buffers (preparation of buffers, buffer capacity).
  • Reactions of selected ions.
  • Chromatography.
  • Alcohols and sugars (oxidation of alcohols, reducing properties of sugars).
  • Amino acid, proteins (colour reactions of amino acids, isolectric point, denaturation of proteins).
Literature
    required literature
  • Podklady pro cvičení v IS.
Teaching methods
laboratory practicals, elaboration of laboratory protocols, discussion
Assessment methods
Course-unit credit. Full attendance in all lessons (making up all missing and justified lessons), completion of all lab reports is the condition for the course-unit credit. Depending on epidemiological situation, assessment method may be altered. The current conditions will be posted in IS (Study materials – Course-related instructions).
Language of instruction
