Course objectives
Introduction to basic topics in following specialties: cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, urology and plastic surgery. Acquisition of theoretical knowledge of etiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of diseases, diagnosed and treated by above-mentioned specialties. Acquisition of practical skills in in clinical examination of patients and determination of diagnostic workup and therapeutic management with unique approach of each specialty: cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, urology and plastic surgery.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course student will:
be able to describe etiopathogenesis and clinical presentation of diseases and conditions treated by cardiac surgeons, neurosurgeons, urologists and plastic surgeons.
know diagnostic workup and differential diagnosis of diseases and conditions treated by cardiac surgeons, neurosurgeons, urologists and plastic surgeons.
be able to summarize indications and principles of conservative and invasive treatment of diseases and conditions treated by cardiac surgeons, neurosurgeons, urologists and plastic surgeons.
be able to clinically examine, determine diagnostic workup and suggest treatment for patient with condition treated by cardiac surgeons, neurosurgeons, urologists and plastic surgeons.
Syllabus
  • Cardiac surgery: introduction, extracorporeal circulation, heart valve disease, coronary artery disease, heart transplantation, thoracic aorta, congenital heart disease.
  • Neurosurgery: introduction, congenital disorders, intracranial hypertension, intracranial expansions, hydrocephalus, neuro-oncology, neurotrauma, vascular neurosurgery, inflammatory diseases, peripheral nerve surgery, spinal surgery.
  • Urology: introduction, prostate cancer, urothelial and kidney cancer, obstructive uropathy, trauma, urological emergencies.
  • Plastic surgery: introduction, hand surgery and replantation, breast cancer surgery and breast reconstruction, extensive soft-tissue defect reconstruction, congenital anomalies and paediatric plastic surgery, aesthetic surgery.
Teaching methods
Combination of presentations, training on models and simulators, bedside teaching, thematic seminars with discussion
Assessment methods
Credit (seminar and practice attendance) – at the end of block
Written test at the end of each speciality course is recommended.

Practical exam (skills demonstration) – part of State Exam in Surgery in sixth year (case report - diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment proposal, X-ray imaging, surgical instruments)
Final exam – oral - part of State Exam in Surgery in sixth year
