Syllabus
  • 1st week: Introduction, organization of practicals, teaching aids. Overview of histological methods. Tissue processing for light microscopy - explanation and film. Basic histochemistry and immunocytochemistry.
  • 2nd week: Cytology: Ultrastructure of the cell nucleus (during interphase and mitosis). Ultrastructure of cell organelles I (mitochondria, the Golgi apparatus, the endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, lysosomes).
  • 3rd week: Ultrastructure of the cell organelles II (peroxisomes, and the centriol). Cell inclusions. The arrangement of cell surfaces: apical, lateral, and basal ones. Intercellular junctions: adhering, occluding, and communicating ones.
  • 4th week: Blood cells: Preparation of blood smears and their staining. Cytology of formed elements of blood. Differential white cell count (dWCC) - average values, abnormities and terminology of dWCC. Slide: A smear of peripheral blood stained by Pappenheim's method. Repetition I: Tissue processing for light and electron microscopy. Cytology. (a test).
  • 5th week: Hematopoiesis: Erythropoiesis, granulopoiesis and development of thrombocytes. Development of lymphocytes and monocytes. Microscopic structure of the bone marrow. Slide: A smear of bone marrow stained by Pappenheim's method.
  • 6th week: General histology: Use of the light microscope, common faults in microscopy. Results of basic staining methods in histology: Hematoxylin-eosine /HE/ (hepar), hematoxylin-eosine-safron /HES/ (oesophagus), AZAN (prostate), impregnation (cerebellum). Connective tissue proper - classification and examples. Slides: Funiculus umbilicalis, Oesophagus, Posterior segment of the eye, Lien, Aorta.
  • 7th week: Supporting tissues: cartilage and bone. Histogenesis of the bone tissue (ossification). Slides: Trachea, aAricula, Elastic cartilage, Lamellar bone, Chondrogenic ossification. Repetition II: Blood and development of blood cells, connective and supporting tissues, and early human development (a test).
  • 8th week: Epithelial tissue - epithelial membranes (covering epithelia). Slides: Ren, Vesica fellea, Trachea, Oesophagus, Urether, Palpebra, Skin from the finger tip.
  • 9th week: Epithelial tissue - glandular epithelium. Muscle tissue. Slides: Intestinum tenue, Intestinum crassum, Glandula parotis, Glandula submandibularis, Apex linguae, Cardiac muscle tissue.
  • 10th week: Nerve tissue. Slides: Cortex cerebri, Cerebellum, Medulla spinalis, Ganglion spinale, Peripheral nerve, Motor end plate.
  • 11th week: Revision practical: a skill test of practical diagnosis of the connective and supporting, epithelial, muscle and nerve tissues by use of the microscope and videocamera under supervision of tutors. Videorecords. Repetition III: Epithelial tissue, muscle tissue and nerve tissue ( a test).
  • 12th week: Microscopic anatomy. Microscopic structure of the heart and blood vessels. Slides: Artery of the muscular type with a vein, Aorta, Vena cava, Myocardium.
  • 13th week: Microscopic structure of the lymphatic system. Slides: Lymphonodus, Lien (spleen), Thymus of a young individual, Thymus of the adult (with involution changes), Palatine tonsil, Lingual tonsil.
  • 14th week: Microscopic structure of the respiratory system. Slides: Nasal conchae, Epiglottis, Larynx, Trachea, Pulmo.
  • 5th week: Credits.
