Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquiant the students with drugs from selected pharmacotherapeutic groups and to learn them how to use the drugs rationally with respect to their mode of action, indications and contraindications. Moreover, students will be shown, where to find relevant data on drugs and how to work with it.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student should be able to prescribe representatives of individual drug classes in the form of individually prepared pharmaceutical preparation and bulk drugs. The student should be familiar with pharmacological profiles of therapeutic and adverse effects of particular drugs with an attention paid to common drug-drug interactions.

  • Week 1
  • Introduction, instructions. Distribution of co-talks.
  • ANALGESICS.
  • Opioid analgesics. Pharmacotherapy of pain. Opioid addiction therapy. Prescription and practical use of analgesic preparations.
  • Week 2
  • NON-STEROIDAL ANTIINFLAMMATORY DRUGS, DRUGS USED IN GOUT, ANTIPYRETICS.
  • Mechanisms of action and classification of anti-inflammatory drugs. Drugs used in therapy of gout.
  • Getting ready for the next lesson: Central neurotransmitters and sites of drug effects in CNS. Basic psychical functions.
  • Week 3
  • ANTIDEPRESSANTS.
  • Classification and terminology of antidepressants. Review of their mechanisms of action, adverse effects, interactions.

  • Week 4
  • THERAPY OF ANXIETY, HYPNOSEDATIVES.
  • Classification and terminology of psychotropics. Review of their mechanisms of action. Pharmacology of anxiolytics and hypnosedatives. Mechanism of action of benzodiazepines. Prescription of hypnosedatives and psychostimulants.

  • GENERAL AND LOCAL ANAESTHETICS
  • Combined and balanced anaesthesia. Signs and stages of general anaesthesia. Inhaled and injected anaesthetics - classification and characteristics. Review of drugs used in premedication.

  • H1 ANTIHISTAMINES, TREATMENT OF BRONCHIAL OBSTRUCTION.
  • Classification and clinical use of H1 antihistamines.Sites of action and review of drugs of bronchial obstruction and other drugs acting in respiratory tract.

Teaching methods
Drug classes specifics from the Syllabus are firstly briefly reviewed by the teacher, the discussion on possible ambiguities are discussed and learned knowledge is practicesed in case reports from real clinical practice. The training of drug prescription with the use of drug compendia and the computer database of the preparations registered in the Czech Republic (AISLP)follows. Each student prepares a co-talk for specific pharmacological topic.
Assessment methods
The participation in practicals is obligatory and registered. To get credits a student has to pass 4 written tests: a) 1 on special drug presriptions (assessed individually by the teacher), b) 3 x multiple-choice test on knowledge of topics taught (15 questions, number of correct answers indicated). The credits will be given to students who: passed the prescription test and scored at least 6 points from each of multiple-choice tests and their total score from these tests is higher than 20.
