Course objectives
The course objective is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) English language skills and to enhance their knowledge of selected grammar chapters at level B2. The course also seeks to develop in students knowledge of specialized discipline-specific vocabulary, academic presentation and writing skills as well as skills for effective communication between laboratory technicians as well as medical or research personnel.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to use specialist terminology in English; explain terms related to common laboratory work; describe individual steps of laboratory procedures; name laboratory equipment and define its functions. Students will also be able to read, translate and summarize specialist English texts; present and discuss topics related to their study field; write cover letters for academic purposes; master grammatical structures typical of medical and academic language and communicate in both academic and work-related settings with their colleagues as well as medical or research personnel.
Syllabus
  • MEDICAL ENGLISH. Syllabus.
  • 1st session: UNIT 9: Flow cytometry + UNIT 10: Microparticle enzyme immunoassay (MEIA). Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises.
  • 2nd session: UNIT 11: Medical laboratories - Particular requirements for quality and competence + UNIT 12: Safety in clinical laboratory. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises.
  • 3rd session: UNIT 13: Microbiology - Gram stain + UNIT 14: Laboratory automation. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises.
  • 4th session: UNIT 15: Quality control in the laboratory. Reading and translation of text, vocabulary, exercises. Revision.
  • 5th session: Examination test.

Assessment methods
The above mentioned topics will be consolidated using all the study skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Supplementary materials used in the seminars (hard copies, electronic documents etc.) will be provided by the lecturer. The course takes the form of seminars. Attendance is compulsory. Two absences are tolerated provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Office of Studies. Assessment is based on the results of the final examination (testing the knowledge from the autumn and spring semesters) and attendance. The examination consists of two parts, written and oral. The prerequisite for the written part is a presentation on a medical topic during the semester. The prerequisite of the oral part is to reach a minimal score of 65 per cent in the written part of the examination.

Information on completion of the course: Studenti se státní jazykovou zkouškou, příp. jejím ekvivalentem (TOEFL, FCE apod.) mohou vykonat zkoušku kdykoliv během semestru.
