Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand the basic artistic styles and literary styles of the Russian literature in the first half of the 20th century. They should be also able to understand and independently interpret works written by the most significant writers of the russian prose, poetry and drama in this period.
Syllabus
  • The course is focused chosen chapters of the Russian literature of the given period (since 1917 up til first half of 20th century). 1. Literature of „The Silver Age“ of the Russian literature. Symbolism, acmeism, futurism, imaginism. Poetics and the main representatives 2. V. Mayakovsky - personality, poetry, drama 3. M. Cvetayeva – personality and works. 4. Writers „outside the literary styles“ (Bunin, Andreiev). 5. The movement OBERIU. Literary movement until the 30s of 20th century. 6.The situation in the literature after 1917. The phases of the Russian emigration. 7. Realism (Bunin, Kuprin, Zaycev). 8. Neorealism (Zamiatin, Platonov). 9. So called tzv. Magic realism (Bulghakov). 10. Estabilishing of the Socialistic realism. Proletarian literature (Scholochov, Gorki). Union of Writers. 11. Sovietic satire (Ilf and Petrov, Zoschenko, Bulghakov). 12. Lyrics and prose of B. Pasternak (The novel Doctor Zhivago) 13. A. Akhmatova - personality and works
