The course expects students to be familiar with the overview of British literature since the beginnings till the end of the nineteenth century. Students have solid foundations and tools of literary analysis and are comfortable with reading and discussing literary texts in English.

Course objectives
This survey course examines the development of British literature throughout the 20th century against the background of historical, social and cultural events and as demonstrated on concrete literary samples. At the end of the course students will be able to recognize major figures of the 20th-century British literature and up to the present. The lectures will combine literary history, dealing with significant decades, movements and styles, and close reading and analysis practised on individual extracts.

  • 8. Also British: Multiculturalism and ethnic writers.
  • 9. British is not English only: Literature in the Devolution period.

Lecture: literary history and analysis of selected readings along with their examination in the cultural space of the 20th century U.K.
Assessment methods
Interview: readings assigned to the topics covered. Students are expected to discuss the extract and examine it in the relevant context.
