Course objectives
The goal of the course is to adopt the current concept of terminology in the area of pedagogy of people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders, current insights and possibilities of special educational diagnostics, system of education of pupils with intellectual disabilities, including inclusive education and personality of people with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able to:
- have a general knowledge from the area of pedagogy of people with intellectual disabilities;
- apply the approaches to education and upbringing of children and pupils with intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders;
- control of work with pupils with intellectual disabilities at the level of teaching assistant.

  • 1. Education of individuals with intellectual disabilities as field of science. Concept, subject, goals, position in the system of science. 2. Legislation on the issue of school education of pupils with intellectual disabilities. Legislative documents related to inclusive education. 3. Definition and characteristics of intellectual disability. Terminological background. 4. Historical approach to care about people with intellectual disabilities. 5. Etiology of intellectual disability. Biological and social causes of intellectual disability. 6. Classification of intellectual disability. 7. Characteristics of the individual degrees of intellectual disability. 8. Dementia. Definitions, characteristics, symptoms, types. 9. Personality of people with intellectual disabilities. The psychic and somatic development. 10. Special educational diagnostic of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Content and methodological page. 11. Down syndrome. Characteristics, etiology, types, education, counseling. 12. Autism spectrum disorders. Characteristics, etiology, education. 13. Symptomatic speech disorders. Alternative and augmentative communication at people with intellectual disabilities. 14. The system of education of pupils with intellectual disabilities. 15. Counseling services in the Czech Republic. Special Educational Centre provides services for pupils with intellectual disabilities. 16. Teaching methods
Lecture with active participation of students.
Assessment methods
Annotation of professional publication, whose topic will concern education of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Active participation in class (80 %). Written test, for successful completion of this course is required 70 % correct answers.
