Prerequisites
B1 level knowledge of English is required. The B1 student understands the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters, can enter unprepared into conversation about familiar topics and connect ideas in a simple way, can provide information, take messages, give simple instructions and deal with less routine problems, e.g. complaints. He or she can also describe events, experiences, hopes and ambitions; give reasons, explanations of plans and opinions.

Course objectives
The course mission is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) language skills and to enhance their grammar and vocabulary knowledge at level B2 by means of academic topics/issues related to the sphere of special needs education. After completing the course, students can use selected SNE terminology with natural and sophisticated control, show a good command of selected grammar structures, understand both written and spoken academic texts at level B1+/B2, can produce a formal written argument, and can give an oral presentation on a particular SNE issue.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to: understand spoken LSP texts at B1+ level of the CEFR; understand written LSP texts at B1+ level of the CEFR; produce a short argumentative essay on a topic related to SNE; successfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with SNE issues at B1+ level of the CEFR; give an oral presentation on a SNE issue; use selected specialist terminology with natural and sophisticated control; show a good command of selected grammar structures at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR.
Syllabus
  • Course introduction. Subject-specific topics: Introduction to SNE terminology. Visual impairment. Hearing Impairment. Integration/Inclusion of students with sensory impairment in mainstream schools. Speech disorders and speech therapy. Physical impairment. Academic skills: Academic writing - argument essay. Academic speaking - oral presentation. Grammar and vocabulary: Present simple X continuous; past simple X continuous; future in English; introduction to word formation, abstract vocabulary; present perfect tenses; sentence transformations I; passive forms; sentence transformations II; modals.

Teaching methods
Weekly ninety-minute seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (activities developing language skills and grammar/vocabulary knowledge at level B2: listening and reading tasks, grammar and vocabulary practice, pair/group/class discussions and other kinds of speaking activities, collaborative writing, preparing and giving presentations, providing peer-feedback, etc.).
Assessment methods
Course requirements and continuous assessment components' weights: 1) Attendance (only two classes can be missed); 2) Active participation in classes + completed assigned in-term tasks; 4) Completed in-term writing assignments (10 marks); 5) Oral presentation (10 marks); 6) Credit test (20 marks); Total: 40 marks; PASS MARK = 26 marks (65%).
