Course objectives
The main objective of the course is a detailled information about pedagogy of visually impaired. At the end of the course, students should understand and use data about: Categories of people with visual impairment, occurrence and causes, children with multiple handicap, deaf-blind children, peculiarities of psychical process by visually impaired, system of schools for visually impaired, counselling, special educational centres, technical aids, visual stimulation, mobility, quality of life in visually impaired.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to: - Understand the issue of the specific impact of visual impairment on human life in different areas -identify essential areas of guidance for people with visual impairment depending on the degree of disability and age - recommend suitable aids for education, leisure or everyday life of a person with visual impairment
Syllabus
  • 1. Terminology. The history of care for visually impaired people in and around the world.
  • 2. Persons with visual impairment. Effect of visual impairment on an individual's personality (perception, thinking, attention, behavior, speech). Psychomotor development of a visually impaired child.
  • 3. Physiology of the vision process. Development of visual perception.
  • 4. Visual defects, types of visual defects, etiology, manifestations. Examination of vision and visual functions.
  • 5. Early intervention - the theoretical basis of early care, forms and services. Centres, clients and services
  • 6. Child with visual impairment at pre-school age, (preschool education, child with impaired binocular vision and reeducation of these defects)
  • 7. Child with visual impairment in school age. Specifics of teaching. Teacher assistant work.
  • 8. Technical aids for people with visual impairment and work with them. Use of computer technology in the education of pupils with visual impairment.
  • 9. The system of education of pupils with visual impairments in the Czech Republic.
  • 10. Communication of Persons with visual impairment - Braille teaching and writing. Access to information.
  • 11. Counselling and Intervention: Providers and Services
  • 12. Mobility in persons with visual impairment.
  • 13. Child with multiple disability. Deafblindness - Specifics of communication and education of deafblinds.
  • 14. Vocational training for people with visual impairment.
  • 15. Free time for blind and partially sighted people.
