Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce the world literature for children and young adults in partial probes of its development, paying particular attention to the authors and texts inserted into present readers. Lectures combine literary-historical as well as thematological point of view, and note current events in the world literature for young adults. Students will get an insight into the literary genres and movements of literature for children of the period in question. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of the literary process in that particular period. They will be able to interpret literary pieces as well as justify and support their views using their knowledge of literary studies.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to independently interpret and critically evaluate the world literary production intended for children and youth on the basis of the knowledge of literary-historical topics. They will perceive the continuity and interaction of literary works in a world context across national literatures and epochs. They can orientate himself in the book offer and they select suitable titles for his own literary work and for use in interdisciplinary overlaps.

  • 1. The concept of world literature for young people, international organizations and institutions dealing with literature and books for children and young people. 2. The contribution of the English and French Enlightenment to youth literature, the origins of youth literature in the European context. 3. The folktale in various national literatures. 4. The development of the author's fairy tale in the 19th century. 5. Didactic literature of the 19th century. 6 - 9. Developmental trends in youth literature of the 20th and 21st centuries, selected representatives (e.g. J. M. Barrie, A. A. Milne, A. de Saint-Exupéry, A. Lindgren, T. Jansson, J. Gaarder, D. Almond, T. de Fombelle). 10. Hans Christian Andersen Prize, ALMA.
