Prerequisites
Předpokladem pro zapsání tohoto předmětu na úrovni B2 (Evropského referenčního rámce jazyka) je aktiví znalost anglického jazyka na úrovni B1 (pre-intermediate). The intermediate student (Level B2) can understand the main ideas of texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Course objectives
The course is designed to develop especially the following: 1) Specialized language related to student’s subject/s of study. 2) Academic skills: speaking: giving a presentation; writing: application for a scholarship, project statement) 3) "Abstract" vocabulary 3) Grammar (level B2) 4) Language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) by means of up-to-date topics related to education or academic sphere.

  • W 1 Mock test W 2 – 5 Education, school, teaching (educational systems and strategies, teaching methods, lesson plans, motivation in education, dealing with problems in the class – classroom management, teaching pupils/students with special needs…) (discussion, listening, reading, vocabulary) Academic skills: Language of discussion/argumentation, critical thinking W 2 Oral presentations allocation Grammar: W 2 Present tenses W 3 Past tenses W 4 Future in English (will, going to, present continuous; time clauses: when, as soon as… I am) W 5 Present perfect simple and continuous W 6 Academic skills: Application for a scholarship, project statement (layout + structure; punctuation; linking words) Assign project statement + application for a scholarship W 7 Academic skills: Language of presentation + presentation skills Grammar: Modals I (can, have to, allowed to, must, mustn’t, should) W 8 Mock test W 9 – 13 Oral presentations + follow-up discussions Grammar: W 8 Word order – indirect questions,… W 9 Reported speech W 10 Conditionals (first, second, zero) W 11 Verbs + prepositions W 12 Phrasal verbs I W 13 Make X do W 14 Credit test
Assessment methods (in Czech)
In-term assignments: A) Project statement + application for a scholarship (assigned in W 6, first draft due on W 8, second draft due on W 11), B) Oral presentation; Credit requirements: 1) Attendance; 2) Completed in-term assignments; 3) Credit test (3 parts: listening, reading comprehension, use of English; level B2; passing limit 50%).
