Course objectives
At the end of this lecture students will be able to understand some important chapters of the functional and formal morphology. Student will be able to describe with the subject of the morphology, with the morphology in the linguistics, with the morphological terminology (morpheme, morph, allomorph, and grammatical structure of the word). It deals with the criterion of the word sorts classification and with the character of the word sorts, with the tendency in the contemporary Czech morphology, with stylistic aspects in the morphology and with the morphology in the Czech language teaching.
Syllabus
  • 1. Subject of morpology, its place among other linguistic disciplines. 2. Morpheme, morph, allomorph. 3. Structure of shape. 4. Criterion for classification of word sorts. 5. Grammatical categories of nouns, adjectives and verbs. 6. Characteristics of individual word sorts - meaning, grammatical forms, doublets, usage. 7. Trends of the change in the development in morphology. 8. Stylistic aspects in morphology. 9. Morphology in Czech language teaching at school.

Teaching methods
A lecture combined with subsequent discussion on the professional issues of the course.
Assessment methods
Credit reguirements: Written test at the end of the term. The test includes cca 30 questions focused on elementary language phenomena according to the syllabus. Students needs to gain at least 70%.
