Course objectives
The course pursues the course of The Principles of Onomastics and supposes the undergraduates knowledge of onomastic terminology. Seminar work focuses on the structural analyses of proper nouns, on formants of word-formation of the proper names and on analyses of so-called "ono-lexis", on typology of the motivation of proper names and on denotative models (types). Attention is paid to the place names and personal proper names (especially "familiar" or "homy" proper names) and to using of them in communication. The students specify the ways how the proper nouns were created and repertoire of their formal means of formation. Anthroponomy is accentuated.
The students should be able:
1. to differentiate proprial and appellative meaning of lexical units;
2. to be acquainted with word-formation of proper nouns;
3. to explain relationship between proper nouns ("propriets") and the matter of facts that is denominated (for example reflection of the natural and social phenomena in proper names);
4. to use the knowledge on proper names in teaching of Czech language and literature.

  • 3 Analysis of concrete proper nouns / names.
  • 4 Onomastics and school. Use of onomastic knowledge in the Czech language teaching in basic schools.
  • 5 Problems of writing capital letters with proper nouns / names.
  • 6 Interpretation of word-formation means for formation / building proper nouns / names.

Ending of course: Credit
Students have to make out written essay on the theme given by teacher of the lecture (for example: personal proper name in the locality in question, place names in the locality in question...).
That are evaluated the objective accuracy of the research report and the language and stylistic quality of the text, too.
