Syllabus
  • The course provides an introduction to functional comparative text analysis. It examines the communicative functions of linguistic elements in parallel English and Czech texts. The elements will be analyzed from the point of view of their semantic content and their semantic and syntactic relation to other elements. Special attention will be paid to the role of context. The course draws on Czech linguistic theories of functional sentence perspective (topic-focus articulation).

Seminar; Assessment: comparative analysis and functional interpretation of an extract of parallel English and Czech texts.
