Course objectives
The course is focused on the connection of Russian classical literature and music, primarily on Russian classical literary works adapted by the 19th–21st centuries Russian composers. In the course students will gain an insight into the history of Russian classical music and its development, as well as some connections to the development of literature. The participants of the course will learn in detail the selected works of Russian classics from different periods and will focus on the specificity of their adaptation to music works. The range of authors includes various literature works from A. Pushkin, M. Lermontov, N. Gogol, N. Leskov, through A. Akhmatova, S. Chorny, A. Voznesensky to Vik. Yerofeyev, V. Sorokin and others. Students will hear the music by M. Glinka, M. Musorgsky, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, P. Tchaikovsky, S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, A. Rybnikov, A. Sсhnittke, L. Desyatnikov and others.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course students will get and deepen their knowledge in the sphere of Russian literature, music, art and culture (both classical and modern);
- they will learn about the most important names of Russian authors, composers and artists;
- they will manage to feel specific cultural, historical and aesthetic connections;
- they will be able to recognize basic music works connected to Russian literature, to understand the difference of literary and music interpretations and to make their own comparative work on this topic.

  • 3) M. Mussorgsky Boris Godunov.
  • 4) P. Tchaikovsky Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades.
  • 5) Gogol’s works in the music by Rimsky-Korsakov (May Night and Christmas Eve).
  • 6) Gogol’s works in the music by D. Shostakovich and A. Schnittke.
  • 7) D. Shostakovich and N. Leskov: Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District.
  • 8) Literary works in the music by S. Prokofiev.
  • 9) Literary themes in I. Stravinsky’s music works.
  • 10) Rock-opera Juno and Avos by A. Rybnikov and A. Voznesensky.
  • 11) Vl. Sorokin and L. Desyatnikov: The Children of Rosenthal.
