- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to acquire a basic idea of what happened in British literature in the period of approximately 1870 to 1945. The non-compulsory lecture should help you to find your way in the enormous amount of information available, pointing to developments, streams, personalities and works that are often considered as worth attention. In the seminar we will look at a concrete work (or works) connected with the period dealt with in the lecture. After you have read it at home, we will talk about its different aspects, both thematic and formal. We will also see how the work can be related to our human experience, how it enriches us as human beings. Besides the seminar reading (contained in The Norton Anthol-ogy of English Literature, ( vol. II), you will be asked to read at least five works of your own choice from the period.
