Course objectives
CHARACTEROLOGY is based on Prague School's view of language as unified system of means and ends. Main areas: Dialectics of form and meaning. Two functional domains according to Mathesius: naming + predication. Principles of Lexicology and Word Forming. Principles of Syntax Contrastive description of Czech and English. Applications: translation, stylistics, cultural analysis. Universal categories as basis of comparability. Main verbal and nominal grammatical categories. General part (responsible teacher: Kudrnacova) Program of Prague School characterology Form and Meaning Naming Contrastive Lexicology Putting Words into Sentences Special part: (responsible teacher: Ruzicka) Basic Lexical Categories in Czech and English + Grammatical Categories attached to them Verbal categories - Tense, Mood, Aspect, Polarity Nominal categores - Definiteness,Case, Countability, Number, Gender Adjectival categories - Degree Minor Word Classes (pronouns, question words, prepositions)
