Course objectives
This course is complement to lectures about Czech literature of the first of the 20th century. It is devoted to the most significant authors and issues from the Czech modern (Česká moderna) group to the 40s of the 20th century. The students are led to understanding to literature in its imanent conception as well as in its broader context. It will be focused on the analyses of concrete works while the important thing is to integrate the particular work in the author's writings and literary movement but also in cultural and social context in general. Students will use primary sources, reviews, manifestations and recent secondary literature on subject.
Main aim of this course is: understanding to literary development in the broader cultural and social context, encompassment of deep analysis of particular works and methods of critical synthesis.
Syllabus
  • Doc. Kudrnáč: The basic introduction to the literature of the field; literary groups of the Czech fin de sičcle; the ante-war generation or the "generation of rebels"; the role of the 1914 Almanac; poetism in its relations to other literary schools; psychological prose of the nineteen thirties and before; drama from the end of the nineteenth century to the nineteen forties; the birth of the Czech literary criticism at the turn of the twentieth century and its further development; the innovative and traditional tendencies in historical prose; important expressionistic authors; the poetic schools of the nineteen thirties and forties.

Assessment methods
Assesment: essay, active participation and attendance. Exam will be based on interpretation of historical development of particular period (to the extent of the textbook Lehár, Jan a kol.: Česká literatura od počátků k dnešku), knowledge of recommended primary literature and analyses of the works read by student.
