the Czech Language Atlas and its significance for knowledge about the development of the Czech language
areal linguistics: development and methods;
specific features of the Czech dialectological school and its contributions to areal linguistics;
how to use specific maps of the Czech Language Atlas;
how to use the knowledge acquired when working with a language material.
Syllabus
1. Areal linguistics: development and methods
2. Czech Language Atlas in the context of other language atlasaes – Slavonic and non-Slavonic
3. Lixical, morphological and phonological dialectal features in an areal view
4. Reflection of contacts with neighbouring languages in Czech dialects
5. The significance of Czech Language Atlas for information about present-day language, especially its spoken varieties
6. A part of the course is a visit to the specialized dialectological research centre.
