Course objectives
The course seeks to acquaint the art history students with the basic styles and architects, working in the 19th Century in the Europe. The particular attention is dedicated to the theoretical writings of the romantic, rigorous and late historism.
Syllabus
  • 1. The basic remarks: the style – historicism – the origin of the autonomous architecture in the late 18th Century. & 2. Karl Friedrich von Schinkel ana last great „idea“ of architecture.& 3. The romantic historism.& 4. The architectural theory on Kernform and Kunstform (Karl Bötticher). & 5. Gottfried Semper.& 6. The rigorous historism and neorenaissance.& 7. The heritage conservation and reconstruction.& 8. The urban design in the 19th Century.& 9. The late historism I: neobaroque.& 10. The late historism I: eclecticism.& 11. The engineering and buildings structure.&
