Course objectives
The course, supplementary to Latin Grammar I, is prepared for the students with small preliminary knowledge of Latin. Main objectives of the course are:
to practise Latin grammar as taught in Latin Grammar I;
to assess the grammatical features covered as a part of Latin morphology and find similarities between them;
to practise systematical approach to the Latin grammar;
to practise translation from and into Latin;
to give methodical support to the students (how to learn Latin morphology, how to work with dictionary, etc.).
Syllabus
  • Repetition of basic knowledge of Czech grammar (grammatical categories, parts of speech, sentence structures, types of clauses, etc.). Practice of clause analysis.
  • Latin grammatical terminology.
  • Morphology: nouns of 1st-5th decl.; adjectives 1st-3rd decl.; formation of adverbs; comparison of adjectives and adverbs; declination and function of pronouns and pronominal adjectives; numerals; verbs of 1st-4th conjugation including deponent verbs, irregular verb esse.
  • Syntax: accusative with infinitive construction, selected types of subordinated clauses (final, conditional and relative clauses, cum historicum).

Assessment methods
Grammar exercises, translation of short Latin texts, homework. Awarding of the credit is based on the active participation in the class, handing in of homework (2 to 3 pieces) throughout the semester and completion of the final written test. Class participation is required, only 3 absences are accepted.
