The course is aimed at complete beginners, no previous knowledge of Latin is required.

Course objectives
The course is designed as a practical introduction into Latin for students of German language. It aims at providing students with a proficiency-oriented immersion in beginning Latin while emphasis is placed on the thorough study of the fundamentals of grammar (morphology and syntax). At the end of the course, successful students will be able to translate (using a dictionary) an elementary Latin text.
Syllabus
  • Review of study-literature (textbooks, dictionaries, grammar books); Classical Latin; Different kinds of pronunciation; Elementary grammar categories: declensions of nouns; verbs - indicative of the present, imperfect and future tense in active and passive voices; infinitive of the present tense; present participle; adjectives; adverbs; numerals. Direct questions; relative clauses.

Requirements for credit: regular attendance at seminars (75%) and successful scores in two written tests during the semester and a Final test.
