Course objectives
This course is aimed at an understanding of the main problems faced by Eastern and South Eastern Europe until 1492. Attention will be focused on various themes: the influence of the Byzantine Empire on the region, the ethnogenesis of the Slavs, state formation and Christianisation, the break-up of early medieval states and the arrival of the appanage period, the formation of nation states in the 14th and 15th centuries and the principle problems from church and cultural history. Particular emphasis is placed upon the difference in development between Western and Eastern Europe during this period, due to the pronounced Byzantine influence. This course is aimed at an understanding of the main problems faced by Eastern and South Eastern Europe until 1492. By the end of the course students will have an understanding of the specific development of Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages and will be able to explain the principle causes for the differences in development between Western and Eastern Europe. An understanding of the function of the Byzantine Empire and travellers in the history if Eastern Europe will provide a base from which they will be able to explain the circumstances surrounding the growth of despotic regimes.

  • 8. The origin of national states. Poland, Lithuania, Duchy of Moscow in the 14th and 15th centuries
  • 9. The Kiev metropolis and all of Russia and their roles in the 14th and 15th centuries
  • 10. The Polish-Lithuanian Union and the consequences of its foundation
  • 11. Church union as a means of ordering religious relationships in Eastern Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries
  • 12. The Muscovite (Russian) ruler as the Orthodox Tsar.
