Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: describe ethnogenesis of the Slovaks, describe the development of Slovak ethnology as a scientific discipline. Students should be able to analyze the phenomena of Slovak traditional culture, and compare the phenomena of Slovak traditional culture with the phenomena of Czech traditional culture.
Syllabus
  • Ethnogenesis of the Slovaks and their transformation into a modern nation.
  • Slovaks abroad.
  • Ethnic composition of present-day Slovakia and its problems.
  • Historiography of Slovak ethnography (Enlightenment, national revival).
  • Development of Slovak ethnology as a scientific discipline (20th century).
  • Contemporary Slovak ethnology and anthropology.
