Course objectives
The seminar will deal with the problem of eternity of world in ancient Platonic and Aristotelian thought. The following texts will be read and discussed in the seminar:
Plato - Timaeus, Aristotle - On the Heaven, Plutarch - On the Generation of the Soul in the Timaeus, Alcinous - The Handbook of Platonism, Proclus - On the Eternity of the World, Philoponus - On the Eternity of the World against Aristotle.
You have to prepare at home the passages we will read on the lesson. These passages will be translated as well as discussed. The texts prepared will be submitted in the ELF.

After the completion of the course, students should understand different ways of argumentation in the problem and to evaluate them critically.

  • 1. Reading of selected passages of Plato's Timaeus.
  • 2. Reading of selected passages of Aristotle's On the Heaven.
  • 3. Reading of selected passages of Plutarch's On the Generation of the Soul in the Timaeus.
  • 4. Reading of selected passages of Alcinous: The Handbook of Platonism.
  • 5. Reading of selected passages of Proclus: On the Eternity of the World.
  • 6. Reading of selected passages of Philoponus' On the Eternity of the World against Aristotle.

Working with the text in seminars, discussion, homework.
Assessment methods
The conditions for gaining credits are submitting of homework in time and active participation in lessons.
