Course objectives
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- understand the main differences between various languages used in the Apennine peninsula in the 1st millenium B.C.
- understand the main causes giving birth to various dialects
- define the basic influence of various substrata
- have a general view of the dialects of Italy of today
- describe their phonetic, morphosyntaxical and lexical particularities.
Syllabus
  • - linguistic situation in the Apennine peninsula in the 1st millenium B.C.
  • - differentiation of Vulgar Latin due to the influence of various substrata, both Indoeuropean (Italic, Greek, Celtic) and non-Indoeuropean (Etruscan, Ligurian)
  • - a systematic survey of modern Italian dialects and their classification
  • - phonetic, morphosyntaxical and lexical characteristics of main dialects (romanesco, piemontese, milanese, friulano, veneziano, napoletano)
  • - description of historical roots of the phenomena
  • - the Sardinian language
  • - study of selected texts written in various dialects.
