Course objectives
Medieval Latin is a historical, cultural and linguistic phenomenon that is a direct successor of Latin language and literature of Classical antiquity. At the end of the course, students should be able to explain this continuity and its means; to point out the main characteristics of Medieval Latin; to describe the forms of Medieval Latin prose and poetry; to evaluate the importance of the Bible in Medieval Latin literature; to employ information about primary sources and scholarly literature in their further studies.
Syllabus
LECTURE:
1. Definition and chronology of Medieval Latin studies.
2. History of Medieval Latin studies.
3. Constitutive elements of Medieval Latin (Classical, Vulgar and Christian Latin).
4. Dictionaries and other basic tools for the study of Medieval Latin.
5. Status of Latin in the late Roman Empire.
6. Forms and genres of Medieval Latin prose.
7. Forms of Medieval Latin poetry (metrical, rhythmical and rhythm-metrical poetry).
SEMINAR: Reading, translation and analysis of selected texts.
