Basic knowledge of the language system; a passed examination in "Introduction into Linguistics" required.

Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain the theories of a language sign (de Saussure, Peirce, Jakobson), explain the para- and syntagmatical relationships among the (context bound) language signs and will be able to understand and interpret these relationships in a text.
Syllabus
  • Theory:
  • semiotics and semantics; semantics in the philology;
  • the language sign of de Saussura, Peirce and Jakobson;
  • signifé x signifiant (icony, index, symbol and subcategories);
  • paradigmatic and syntagmatic relationships on all levels (phonetic to text)
