Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to improve students’ pronunciation in Czech language.
Syllabus
  • The following topics will be covered during the course: 1/ stress and rhythm 2/ vocals (vocalic quantity) 3/ diphthong ou (diphthong in words taken from foreign languages) 4/ quantity that can change the meaning 5/ vowels in foreign words 6/ consonant system 7/ pronunciation of difficult consonants : ď, ť, ň; j; s-z, ž-š, c-č; r-l (syllabic r, l); h-ch 8/ consonant ř 9/ voiced consonants 10/ modulation of continual speech (stress, words without stress, stress in a sentence, modulation of tones, stress in complementary questions) Students will begin with reading particular words and then they will interpret more difficult texts.

Teaching methods
During the course students are taught how to pronounce correctly (they read given texts loudly) and they practice the interpretation of the Czech text.
Assessment methods
Final written test. Besides the test, the following rules must be observed: 1/ In order to successfully finish the course, student's participation in the course must be at least 75 %. If student's participation drops below 75 %, he will not be allowed to write the final test. 2/ The students fullfils all tasks given by the teacher (homeworks, presentations etc.) Unpreparedness is judged as absence. 3/ Students must not switch study groups, unless the Head of Department of Czech for Foreigners explicitly approved it.
