Course objectives

The students will learn of the development of modern Czech theatre, its prime representatives in stage directing; Impressionism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Civilism; analyses of key stage productions; changing acting styles; theatre criticism in the 1900s to 1930s.

• The age in context, modern artistic movements and the development of Czech theatre
• Modernist Czech Theatre in the European context
• National Theatre, The Municipal Theatre in the Královské Vinohrady, Lyrické divadlo Theatre and the Divadlo umění Theatre
• Jaroslav Kvapil, dramatist, dramaturg, director, organizer
• Expressionist Czech Theatre
• František Zavřel, Czech-German expressionist
• K.H. Hilar, a Czech director on the verge of Modernism and the Avant-Garde
• The rise of the "Small Stages" Movement and their impact on modern theatre. The Lucerna. The Revoluční scéna Theatre.
