Course objectives
The lecture introduces the issue of LaTene period on the area of Central Europe in broader cultural-genetic connotations. The lecture's aim lays in methodological aspects of study of the Czech, Bavarian, Moravian, Austrian, Slovakian, and Hungarian area from the late Hallstadt period to the time around the year 0.
- the first part will be fosuced on contacts between the West-Hallstatt Chief environment with the Meditterranean (Greek and Etruscan imports), process of establishing the Celtic ethnicity, and creation of the Early Celtic artistic style. The main objectives are following: causes and development of the Celtic expansion, flat cemeteries, and their significance for our understanding of Celtic society.
Attention will be also paid to the present state of settlement features exploration, new view on significance and role of oppidums for Central European Celtic civilization, evaluating of the economy and trade level. Lectures also include overview of Celtic religious concepts, and illustrate their reflection in Arts.
Syllabus
  • 1. Spatial and temporal determination, basic terminology, LaTene periodization systems overview. Relative and absolute chronology.
  • 2. Late Hallstadt Ducal civilization characteristics (Upper Donau, Eastern France), its contacts with the Meditterrean (Greek and Etruscan imports).
  • 3. Early LaTene tombs of elite and fortifications (Hochdorf, Hradiště u Písku, Dürrnberg, Závist u Prahy, Černov). Establishing of the Early LaTene decorative style.
  • 4. Historic Celts presence in Bohemia - overview of hypothesis. Causes and main directions of the expansion. Pre-Duchcov horizon, Duchcov-Münsingen horizon. Flat Celtic cemeteries, their chronology, and general elements.
  • 5. Flat cemeteries characteristics in Bohemia, Bavaria, Moravia, and Austria (concordances, differences, specific features).
  • 6. Flat cemeteries characteristics in Carpatian area (Slovenia, Hungaria, Transylvania (concordances, differences, specific features). Anthropology of the Central European Celtc. Stratification of LaTene society on the basis of cemetery analysisť.
  • 7. Celtic settlement features, their hierarkhy, and classification. Settlement feature types, overall settlement built-over. Connection between villages and flat cemeteries.
  • 8. Oppidums - introduction, discussion, and definition discussion. Hypotheses and causes of genesis. Types and variants of fortifications. Overview of the so-called problematic 'oppids'.
  • 9. Present state of exploration of oppids in Bavaria and Czech Republic, Carpathia (Bratislava, Dákové on SW Slovenia). Late LaTene high fortified settlements.
  • 10. Examples of high fortified settlements on Central Donau (Freinberg, Gründberg, Wien-Leopoldsberg, Braunsberg, Děvín) and Eastern Slovenia (Zemplín).
  • 11. Issue of the so-called 'Viereckschanzen', their spatial and geographical relation to the oppids (Bavaria, Bohemia, Moravia). Problems of late LaTene period burial customs.
  • 12. Celtic religious ideas - written evidence, archaeological material: cultic places, votive finds, burial customs, sculpture.
  • 13. Economic characteristics of the Central European LaTene. Agriculture. Manufacture agglomerations, development of the specialized handcrafts. Celtic coinige development, level of long-distance and local trade.
  • 14. Púchovská culture - distribution, development, ethnicity, settlement types, and main sites. Issue of the so-called 'latenization' of the non-celtic groups.
  • 15. technical and civilization advance of the celtic society. Hypothesis on causes of Central European Celts downfall.Ccivitas Boiorum in the Roman period.
