Course objectives

The lecture complements the instruction on Slavic archaeology. It is supposed to amplify the knowledge of architecture of the Old Slavs in our territory in the 6th – 10th cent. For auxiliary purposes the lecture may be divided into three parts. The first characterizes architecture and the individual types of settlement features and habitats in the territory of the assumed Slavic homeland (4th – 5th cent.) and the same issues clearly related to the first Slavs in our territory (6th – 7th cent.). The second part is devoted to the development of dwelling, other features and settlement types of the Pre-Great Moravian and Great Moravian periods, including the characteristic of fortification architecture (8th – 9th cent.). The third part contains an analysis of masonry architecture of Great Moravia, esp. ecclesiastical structures.

Syllabus

• 1. Introduction to the issues of architecture. Specialist terminology. Characteristic of the period and the territory covered by the lecture. 2. Settlement buildings and types of settlements in the territory of the Przework, Cernjachov and Zarubintsy cultures and the Kievan type. Issues of the oldest Slavic settlement of Bohemia and Moravia. Types of settlement features: earth-houses, surface structures, reconstruction possibilities of above-ground parts (building techniques), roofs, floors. 3. Equipment of the Early Slavonic dwellings, types of heating equipment. Origin and chronology of the individual types of dwellings. Types of habitats and settlements of the 6th – 7th cent. Characteristic of some well-known sites. Literature. 4. The development of settlement buildings of the Pre-Great Moravian and Great Moravian periods. New types of dwellings and farm buildings; large pole structures; long earth-houses with furnaces; wells. Division of settlement features according to various authors. 5. Trades and features of manufacturing character. Characteristic of workshops as wholes on the grounds of archaeological finds. Workshops of the Pre-Great Moravian period. Workshops of the Great Moravian period. Development of workshop buildings. Organization of trades; manufacturing artisan enclosures. 6. Constructions of fortification character of the 8th - 10th cent. Division of rampart bodies. Types of constructions. Ramparts of the Pre-Great Moravian and Great Moravian fortified settlements in this country in the context of European development. 7. Building technique in the implementation of fortification, raw materials used; durability of rampart bodies. Theoretical questions of the stamina of our fortified settlements. Literature. 8. Introduction to the issues of masonry Slavic architecture. Terminology. Classification of masonry buildings. History of research and the development of opinions. Methodology of conducting of archaeological excavations. 9. Pretentious structures of profane character, their characteristic and reconstruction of above-ground parts based on archaeological finds. The purpose of structures with palatial design. The question of interiors. Integration of masonry buildings of power character into our fortified settlements. 10. Structures of ecclesiastical character. Typology. Issues of provenance of the individual types of churches according to Pošmourný, Cibulka, Richter, Hrubý, Dostál, Klanica and other authors. 11. Issues of the oldest masonry structures. The used material, division of mortars, construction techniques, roof covers, the question of utilization of older material from the Roman Era. Construction modules and usage of length measures. Possible construction procedures in the implementation of structures. 12. Issues of ecclesiastical structures at the individual fortified settlements with a view to the development of the sites. Question of chronology of the Veligrad type personal ornament in relation to the dating of ecclesiastical structures; issues of construction remnants in the filling of grave pits at the church cemeteries.
