Course objectives
The aim of the course is the analysis and the practice of basic morphological and syntactic phenomena of the normative Latin grammar necessary for understanding of self-contained Latin texts. At the end of the course students will be able to: demonstrate the knowledge of primary Latin grammar, read and translate the unknown texts.
Syllabus
  • Lessons 12-16 of the given textbook are covered: Morphology: gerund and gerundive; participles; supine. Syntax: independent uses of the subjunctive mood, consecutive clauses; participle constructions; periphrastic conjugation; ablative absolute; uses of accusative and nominative in subordinate clauses; gerundive constructions.

Assessment methods
The active class attendance (75%), passing a written test where knowledge of relevant grammar is examined and final oral examination are the essential requirements for the grade. The course grade is determined by the performance in a written test where the students’ mastery of basic grammar is tested through a translation of Latin sentences and through grramatical tasks (success rate of 65%). During the oral part of the exam the student translates and analyses a short self-contained Latin passage.
